Housing is a Right
In addition to housing, Door of Hope also provides support services to our participants, so that they may live securely and be successfully reintegrated into the community.
Trained Social Workers assist our program participants in accessing the benefits available to them, including medical care, mental health support, addiction counseling, money management support, and employment/education assistant. Nurses and nursing in training assist program participants with basic medical attention as well as teach preventative classes in personal hygiene, dental care, wound care, and dehydration … just to name a few. Frequently, Door of Hope volunteers provide the companionship needed during this sometimes difficult and lengthy process of accessing the benefit system.
Meeting Daily Needs at Door of Hope
Door of Hope provides our program participants with basic hygiene and household cleaning items. For individuals recently moved from the streets to an apartment, we provide furniture and other needed household items.
Offering Meals at Door of Hope
In addition to helping our newly housed program participants access agencies that provide groceries at a minimal fee, Door of Hope offers on-site meals monthly. On average, we serve more than 3000 meals annually. Volunteer cooks make many of our meals possible. Each month volunteers, staff and program participants share a meal together. We talk, we listen, and we share our lives.
Activities at Door of Hope
Door of Hope schedules weekly on-site activities peer support groups for our program participants. Thanks to partnerships with partnering non-profits, our program participants are offered a variety of activities. Additionally, our staff and volunteers organize visits for our Guests to Memphis landmarks such as the Memphis Zoo, the Pink Palace Museum, Museum, Civil Rights Museum, and local sporting events. More informally, we offer board games and everyday conversation, often shared over cup of coffee or tea.
Volunteers Make a Difference
Often, our programs are instituted when the needs of our program participants and the passion of a volunteer meet. Such programs can range from writing classes to better reading skills, from studying to registering to vote. To discuss a new program or skill you would like to offer to Door of Hope program participants, please contact us.
Working with the Earth at Door of Hope
At Door of Hope, program participants and volunteers work together in our gardens and around our property. We also participate in tending the Community Garden at our 245 N. Bellevue community. We welcome any volunteer-led initiatives that will make our earth more sustainable.
“I needed to get out of the streets. I am too old for them now.
I needed a place of my own.”

Transitional/Rapid Rehousing for Survivors of Domestic Violence
We focus on a collaborative and more coordinated approach to reducing unsheltered homelessness for survivors of domestic violence. Door of Hope serves unsheltered individuals that have a history of being victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking. The goal of this program will be to improve safety, advocacy, healthy outcomes, and housing stability among survivors of domestic violence.
Transitional Housing is any designated temporary housing that’s offered at an affordable or subsidized rate to survivors of domestic violence for a set amount of time until they can get on their feet and secure safe housing of their own.
Rapid re-housing rapidly connects survivors of domestic violence to permanent housing services by using personalized packages of assistance and supportive services that may include financial assistance anywhere from 3 months to 6 months, depending on the survivor’s situation. Rapid re-housing offers rental and utility assistance to survivors, relocating them to an apartment or housing of their choice where they feel safe.
